Climate Cluedo - A Pixel Art Game

One-Liner:
Bumble is on a quest to find the Climate change Villain.
About:
A no-stress, simple and fun game about a complex issue that has life-and-death implications.
Designed with a nod to the simplicity of many early pixel-based games like Frogger and Donkey Kong, Climate Cluedo offers players the opportunity to wander through a complex social and political landscape in a very simple manner.
The game explores the nuances of the deceptively complex “Climate Change” debate in a manner that is both whimsical and impactful.
Background and Context:
'Climate Cluedo', our AcrossRCA project, was inspired by the notion that much of the discussion about the “Climate Crisis” is based on an assumption of “altruistic consensus of definitions and motivations.” The term “Climate Change” is widely used but has different meanings when used in different contexts. Much of the “controversy” arises in the liminal spaces where the commonly used definitions do not meet.

We choose to use a very simple game technology of pixel art from early digital game development to ironically juxtapose the assertion of assumed simplicity of consensus about “Climate Change” with the complex reality of nuanced disagreement. Not all those involved in creating or influencing climate policy have the same goals or motivations. We sought to offer an insight into the process of defining and distributing climate policy information in very schematic terms. The idea was to highlight the challenges of the underlying decision-making processes, rather than debating specific climate policies.

The game features universal symbols and concepts that are readily recognizable. The movements are simple, and the language is stylized, but innocuously reflective of the often vitriolic debates we see in the headlines. The intent was to educate through entertainment, rather than to promote any specific social or political agenda. The game is edgy, but fun, and offers a basic overview of a situation that is neither simple nor fun.
